Rubinette Apple Scionwood (Spring 2024)

A high quality Cox's Orange Pippin progeny for warm climates. Also known as Rafzubin.

The most notable feature of this tree is its adaptability to a wide range of climates; Rubinette can be grown in zones 4-9, and fruit quality will not suffer in hot, continental summers. This means you can grow a Cox's-style apple in southern California! The tree is squat and spreading (basitonic), and slow to bear. Growers should be patient, as the quality of the apple will continue to improve as the tree matures. Thinning is also important, as these trees will produce significantly smaller fruit if the crop is not managed. Rubinette is susceptible to fireblight, powdery mildew, and scab.

This is a small apple that is a light, dull red striped over a yellow background. It has the look and flavor of an antique, but many critics have gone further and described it as the best, the tastiest, the most wonderfulest apple they have ever eaten. It is true that the flavor is aromatic and citric, rounded by notes of vanilla and almond. But whether it is the best of the many Cox's progeny is debatable, and your answer will probably depend on where you live; this is most certainly the best Cox's-like apple you can grow in warmer climates.

Rubinette is a cross of Golden Delicious and Cox's Orange Pippin. It was developed by Walter Hauenstein in Rafz, Swizitzerland in 1966 and released in 1976.

Clean vs. Regular

Our clean scion is harvested from trees grown on G.16, which is extremely sensitive to viruses. These trees would not have survived if the scion contained viruses. Our clean wood has not been lab tested. Regular = may contain one of the common latent viruses; this is not usually a problem and can be used with most rootstocks.
