Freedom Apple Scionwood (Spring 2024)

A beautiful, disease-resistant dessert apple that is easy to grow.

Freedom from scab! This spreading tree is highly resistant to scab and moderately resistant to fireblight, cedar-apple rust, all types of canker, and mildew. It is precocious, productive, vigorous, and hardy. A great choice for the home orchardist or the organic grower, Freedom is very easy to grow.

This mid-late season apple is beautiful, medium-large, and almost completely colored red over a yellow background. The flesh is firm, crisp, and juicy, with a sweet, sprightly flavor. This is a multi-use apple; it is good for fresh eating, baking, and sauce, and it will store well for up to three months.

Freedom was developed at the breeding station in Geneva, NY and released in 1983. It is the offspring of two breeding selections, one of which has Macoun, Antonovka, and McIntosh in its parentage, while the other has Golden Delicious, Rome, and Malus floribunda. The combination of Antonovka and Malus floribunda gives Freedom a double dose of genetic scab resistance, and the breeders actually did name the apple for its "freedom" from this affliction.

Clean vs. Regular

Our clean scion is harvested from trees grown on G.16, which is extremely sensitive to viruses. These trees would not have survived if the scion contained viruses. Our clean wood has not been lab tested. Regular = may contain one of the common latent viruses; this is not usually a problem and can be used with most rootstocks.
