Amere De Berthencourt Apple Scionwood (Spring 2023)

A popular bittersweet French cider variety. Also known as Amer de Berthencourt, Berthencourt.

Amere de Berthencourt is prolific and easy to grow, with a vigorous, spreading habit. This tree is somewhat susceptible to scab, powdery mildew, and canker, and it is particularly sensitive to fireblight during bloom. Like many cider varieties, it will need to be thinned to maintain annual bearing.

Grown from a pippin at Parisis Fontain in Berthencourt, Normandy in the 1850s, this heirloom variety has remained a favorite of French cider makers. The fruit is small, yellow with a pink blush, and oblate. Unsuitable for eating, this apple produces a rich amber juice with a long and bitter finish. Honeyed sugars with notes of vanilla and grass are also detectable. (From WSU: Tannin (percent tannic acid): 0.34; Acid (percent malic acid): 0.20; pH: 4.11; SG: 1.049; oBrix: 12.2.)

Clean vs. Regular

Our clean scion is harvested from trees grown on G.16, which is extremely sensitive to viruses. These trees would not have survived if the scion contained viruses. Our clean wood has not been lab tested. Regular = may contain one of the common latent viruses; this is not usually a problem and can be used with most rootstocks.
