Berlepsch, Freiherr Von Apple Scionwood (Spring 2024)

A German heirloom with a striking pineapple flavor. Also known as Berlepsch, Baron de Berlepsch.

An upright-spreading, vigorous tree when young, its growth will even out with cropping. This tree is highly susceptible to fireblight, and somewhat susceptible to canker. The bloom is sensitive to sulfur and late frosts.

Don't judge a book by its cover! This smallish, scruffy, russeted apple has a surprising and intense pineapple flavor. The medium-sized fruit has a yellow-green skin that is blushed and striped with red. The flesh is cream colored, firm, and delicate, and the flavor is an amazing, aromatic delight. Berlepsch von Freiherr is also suitable for cooking, and it stores well for about three months. It has one of the highest vitamin C contents of all apples.

This tree was first cultivated around 1880 by Diedrich Uhlhorn at Grevenbroich, Rhineland. It was named after Hans Hermann Freiherr von Berlepsch, the president of the Rhineland governing council at that time, and it remains a popular commercial apple in Belgium and Rhineland today.

Clean vs. Regular

Our clean scion is harvested from trees grown on G.16, which is extremely sensitive to viruses. These trees would not have survived if the scion contained viruses. Our clean wood has not been lab tested. Regular = may contain one of the common latent viruses; this is not usually a problem and can be used with most rootstocks.
