An attractive, highly disease-resistant apple, ideal for organic growers.
Longjohn Plum Scionwood (Spring 2024)
A bigger, better prune-plune developed at Cornell. Also known as Long John.
The tree is vigorous, upright, spreading and somewhat willowy in growth. Precocious and productive, it is partially self-fruitful, but heavier cropping will be obtained with a good pollenizer. Suitable partners include Polly, Stanley, Castleton, and Victory. This tree is sensitive to mites and canker, but resistant to bacterial spot.
Ripening with Stanley, Longjohn is a large, long, teardrop-shaped, attractive blue plum with fruits that are freestone and very high quality in the style of Iroquois, one of its parents. The skin is dark purple-blue covered by waxy bloom, and the flesh is amber, smooth textured, and similar in firmness to Stanley. It is suitable for packing and shipping. In taste tests this has been my favorite.
Longjohn is named after the late Geneva plum breeder, John P. Watson.
