The rock-star, cold-hardy apple from Minnesota.
Niitaka Pear Scionwood (Spring 2024)
An Asian pear noted for exceptional productivity and fruit size.
This tree is precocious and resistant to a range of diseases, but precautions should be taken against fireblight. It is pollen sterile, but it sets very well when a pollenizer is present. Most Asian pears need thinning to maintain annual cropping, avoid limb breakage, and to obtain optimal fruit size. This is especially true of Niitaka on account of its high productivity and large fruit size.
The fruit is exceptionally large, with an orange-brown russet that is speckled with prominent lenticels. Firm, crisp and juicy, these pears will also store for up to eight months.
Niitaka was released in 1927. It is a cross of Amanogawa and Imamura-Aki, and it is known as the "King of Pears" in Japan, where Niitaka is prized for its size and flavor.
