Winekist Apple Scionwood (Spring 2026)

A stunning red-fleshed apple .

This tree is hardy to zone 3, precocious, and productive, and growers report high levels of disease resistance. Winekist is a natural semi-dwarf. It produces a beautiful red bloom in spring and the leaves are also tinged red.

Georgeous apples! The skin is crimson, and the flesh is deep red. Ripe in summer, these apples are very tart but still sweet enough to appeal as a dessert apple. The flavor is is often compared to cranberry. Winekist are also great for sauce, but growers are especially excited by the stunning red juice.

Winekist was introduced in 1949 by Carl A. Hansen, son of the notable plant breeder Niels Hansen. This tree is likely an offspring of Malus pumila var. niedwetzkyana, the red-fleshed variety that Niels obtained in Kazakhstan. Winekist was then grown by Morris Towle in Maine and later distributed by Fedco Seeds.

Clean vs. Regular

Our clean scion is harvested from trees grown on G.16, which is extremely sensitive to viruses. These trees would not have survived if the scion contained viruses. Our clean wood has not been lab tested. Regular = may contain one of the common latent viruses; this is not usually a problem and can be used with most rootstocks.
