Gibson's Golden Apple Scionwood (Spring 2026)


A smooth-skinned mutation of Golden Delicious. Also known as Smoothee, Gibson Golden Delicious, Improved Golden Delicious.

This apple is very similar to Golden Delicious, of which it is a mutation. The main differences are that the thin skin is shows less russetting and it bears a delicate blush when ripe. The apple is also slightly larger than Golden Delicious. The tree is more vigorous and more reliably annual. As Golden Delicious is a self-fertile variety, it is likely that Gibson's Golden shares this trait. However, for optimal fruit set, we recommend a second variety for cross-pollination.

Gibson's Golden was discovered as a full tree mutation of Golden Delicious at Evans City, PA by Carl R. Gibson. It was introduced in 1968.

Clean vs. Regular

Our clean scion is harvested from trees grown on G.16, which is extremely sensitive to viruses. These trees would not have survived if the scion contained viruses. Our clean wood has not been lab tested. Regular = may contain one of the common latent viruses; this is not usually a problem and can be used with most rootstocks.
