Dudley Apple Scionwood (Spring 2026)

An excellent cold-climate apple. Also known as Dudley Winter, North Star.

Dudley is a moderately vigorous, productive tree with a spreading and drooping habit. It is susceptible to scab. The USDA reports that it is cold hardy to -50°F.

The apple is medium-large, bright greenish yellow, splashed and striped red. The flesh is tinged yellow, firm, crisp, and juicy with a brisk subacid flavor. Dudley will store well for 2-3 months, and its flavor improves during storage. This is an excellent cold-climate apple for sauce and baking. If allowed to ripen fully this apple becomes mellow enough for fresh eating.

Dudley is a cross of Duchess of Oldendburg and Hyslop Crab grown by J. W. Dudley of Maine around 1875.

Clean vs. Regular

Our clean scion is harvested from trees grown on G.16, which is extremely sensitive to viruses. These trees would not have survived if the scion contained viruses. Our clean wood has not been lab tested. Regular = may contain one of the common latent viruses; this is not usually a problem and can be used with most rootstocks.
