Red Baron Apple Scionwood (Spring 2026)

A sweet, hardy dessert apple. Also known as Red Baldwin, Sawyer Baldwin.

This tree is fireblight resistant. Red Baron is also hardy, very productive and moderately vigorous.

Ripening around the same time as McIntosh, this apple is medium-sized and mostly streaked or flushed red over yellow. The flesh is crisp, juicy, sweet, and subacid, and the apple stores well for 4-5 weeks. This is a great apple for fresh eating or baking.

Red Baron originates from a 1926 cross of Duchess of Oldenburg and Golden Delicious made by W. H. Alderman. He selected the cultivar in 1940, and it was introduced by Cecil Stushnoff in 1969. Red Baron was developed at the Horticultural Research Station at Excelsior, MN, the breeding program that eventually also brought us Honeycrisp. Be careful not to confuse Red Baron with Red Barron, a crabapple!

Clean vs. Regular

Our clean scion is harvested from trees grown on G.16, which is extremely sensitive to viruses. These trees would not have survived if the scion contained viruses. Our clean wood has not been lab tested. Regular = may contain one of the common latent viruses; this is not usually a problem and can be used with most rootstocks.
