Oishi-Wase Plum Scionwood (Spring 2026)

A beautiful and prolific Japanese plum.

This plum wins the prize for having the most delightful name. Pronounced "wishy-wasay" you will see it spelled Oushi-Wase, Ohishi-Wasi, and Oishiwase. This is a new introduction from Japan, a plum that is old and revered in both Japan and Korea. The midsized tree is not self-fertile, and it will need to be partnered with another Japanese plum. Like many plums, Oishi-Wase is susceptible to black knot, but we have found that pruning out galls in early spring provides sufficient control.

Oishi-Wase has a very beautiful, spreading habit and it produces prolific quantities of mid-sized, clingstone plums. If the tree is not pruned, overcropping will result in smaller, less flavorful fruit, but a well tended tree will produce deliciously sweet and juicy plums that are golden yellow, overlaid with red blush. Ripening begins very early and progresses in stages, so that a tree can be harvested over the course of several weeks. This is an excellent plum for the backyard and one of our favorites for stocking the farmstand.

Clean vs. Regular

Our clean scion is harvested from trees grown on G.16, which is extremely sensitive to viruses. These trees would not have survived if the scion contained viruses. Our clean wood has not been lab tested. Regular = may contain one of the common latent viruses; this is not usually a problem and can be used with most rootstocks.
