Fillbarrel Apple Scionwood (Spring 2026)

An heirloom cider apple from Somerset, England. Also known as Fill Barrel, Bulmer's Fillbarrel.

This is a moderately vigorous tree with a spreading and slightly droopy habit. Care will be needed to avoid blind wood when pruning. It is strongly biennial and, like many heirlooms, susceptible to fireblight. This variety is used predominantly in cider production; it is not typically esteemed for fresh eating.

Ripening mid October in NY, the fruit is red striped and flushed over yellow with a fine, attractive russet. The flesh is white with a green tinge and yields a bittersweet juice. From WSU: Tannin (percent tannic acid: 0.19; Acid (percent malic acid): 0.22; pH: 3.67; SG: 1.045; °Brix 11.2.

Clean vs. Regular

Our clean scion is harvested from trees grown on G.16, which is extremely sensitive to viruses. These trees would not have survived if the scion contained viruses. Our clean wood has not been lab tested. Regular = may contain one of the common latent viruses; this is not usually a problem and can be used with most rootstocks.
