Empress Plum Scionwood (Spring 2025)

A very late season European plum that stores well.

Empress is a medium-sized tree, upright, with a nice open crown. This tree is not self-fertile and it will need a second European (Domestica) plum as a pollenizer. Recomended partners include Stanley, Vision, Victory, Moyer, President, and Italian. This plum ripens very late, at the end of plum season (late September in upstate NY), and it may not reach maturity in shorter growing seasons.

The fruit is large and elliptical, a high-quality prune-plum. The purple skin has a waxy bloom, and the greenish-yellow flesh is dense and semi-cling. Although prune-plums are most often used for drying, they are also wonderful in cakes and tarts. They can be added to salads and stuffings, soaked in brandy, or pureed into a sweet sauce. Empress will store well for up to eight weeks, so you have plenty of time to decide how eat them. This plum is firm and well suited for retail.

Clean vs. Regular

Our clean scion is harvested from trees grown on G.16, which is extremely sensitive to viruses. These trees would not have survived if the scion contained viruses. Our clean wood has not been lab tested. Regular = may contain one of the common latent viruses; this is not usually a problem and can be used with most rootstocks.
