Spokane Beauty Apple Scionwood (Spring 2025)

An enormous highly-flavored apple. . Also known as Spokane.

A highly vigorous variety that is somewhat susceptible to apple scab, Spokane Beauty is tip bearing, so extra care will be needed when pruning. This tree tends to biennialism.

This is a very, very large apple, often weighing in at over 2 pounds! The skin is deep red blushed over greenish-yellow, and the flesh is firm (despite its size) and white, with a balanced, sprightly flavor. Spokane Beauty is a great multi-purpose apple, working well for fresh eating, juice, drying, sauce, and baking. It was, in fact, listed by Tom Burford as one of the best for baking and sauce. Spokane Beauty will stay firm after baking and it stores well for up to four months.

This tree is first recorded in 1905 in a letter to the USDA by the nurseryman C. L. Whitney, who mentions that the tree has already been in cultivation in Steven's County, WA for some 20 years. It was originally called Maxon Seedling after the Maxon family who raised the first seedling, but the name was changed to Spokane Beauty by the grower E. P. Gilbert.

Clean vs. Regular

Our clean scion is harvested from trees grown on G.16, which is extremely sensitive to viruses. These trees would not have survived if the scion contained viruses. Our clean wood has not been lab tested. Regular = may contain one of the common latent viruses; this is not usually a problem and can be used with most rootstocks.
