A highly flavored, late-season dessert apple, perfect for organic production.
Hyslop Crab Apple Scionwood (Spring 2026)
A crabapple traditionally used for cider. Also known as Hislop, Hyslop's.
This is a vigorous, productive tree, but will it will need diligent pruning as it tends to biennialism. Like many heirlooms, it is also quite susceptible to fireblight. Hyslop Crab is an excellent pollenizer for home growers who need a second tree but have limited space.
Ripening from mid-September to early October, the fruit of this tree is a small-medium crabapple with pretty, deep red skin and white flesh. It is very high in tannin and not suitable for fresh eating. Hyslop Crab has, however, traditionally been valued for jellies, pickles, sauce, and blending into cider. The apple is juicy when first ripe, but it becomes mealy just a few days after picking.
Hyslop Crab was first commercially propagated by Thomas Hislop, a nurseryman of Milwaukee, in 1869. It is thought, however, to have originated earlier in Wisconsin.
