Nertchinsk Apple Scionwood (Spring 2026)

A hardy ornamental crab from Siberia. Also known as Nerchinsk.

This is an extremely cold hardy Siberian crabapple tree (M. baccata) that is fireblight resistant, naturally dwarfing, and has a sturdy, attractive habit.

Nertchinsk produces an abundance of tiny, cute crabapples and makes an excellent ornamental for even the most challenging northern climates. It has also been used as a breeding tree to develop cold-hardy cultivars and rootstocks.

Nertchinsk is among the many varieties brought to America by the adventuresome breeder and traveler Niels Hansen. It arrived in America c. 1924, and its original home was in the Nertchinsk region of Siberia, northeast of Lake Baikal.

Clean vs. Regular

Our clean scion is harvested from trees grown on G.16, which is extremely sensitive to viruses. These trees would not have survived if the scion contained viruses. Our clean wood has not been lab tested. Regular = may contain one of the common latent viruses; this is not usually a problem and can be used with most rootstocks.
