Myrobalan's hardiness and ability to adapt to a wide range of soils make it an excellent rootstock. It is shallow rooted, yet well anchored and vigorous. Trees on Myro will eventually be free-standing, but may benefit from staking for the first few years, especially in lighter soils or windy conditions. It will produce a tree with a mature height of 16-20 feet. As a seedling, is not an especially precocious rootstock, and trees will take four-five years to become productive.

Apricots and almonds can be grown on Myrobalan plum rootstocks. Bob Purvis of Purvis Nursery notes, however, that delayed incompatibility has been reported with some apricot varieties, with three-four year-old trees snapping at the graft union under strong winds. Suckering at the base of the tree can also be evidence of partial incompatibility, which has been reported for Ilona apricots on Myro rootstock.

Myro has good resistance to crown gall and root knot nematode, fair resistance to phytophthora, and it is susceptible to oak root fungus.
