G.890 Apple Rootstock (Spring 2025)

An MM.106 class rootstock that has multiple resistances and good anchorage. Also known as Geneva 890.

G.890 produces trees that are 60% of seedling in NY growing conditions. It is a semi-vigorous selection whose productivity, disease resistance, and tolerance for a wide range of soils and climates make it far superior to M.7, MM.106, and MM.111. This stock is ideal for use in a processing orchard where freestanding trees are desired (although support will be needed for heavy early crops). It is resistant to collar rot, fireblight, replant disease, and woolly apple aphid. Although we have had no reports of virus problems, we do strongly recommend that only virus-free scion wood is used.

It is well anchored.

Cornell planting recommendations for processing cultivars are 5-6' x 14-16' (622-454 trees/acre).

G.890 came out of the Geneva, NY breeding program and the work of my father, Dr. Jim Cummins. It is a cross of Ottawa 3 and Robusta 5. We expect that its resistance to WAA will make G.890 a major player in Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.
