Shinseiki Pear on OHxF 97 (Spring 2025)

You are viewing a tree that will ship in Spring 2025. You can also find trees for Spring 2024.

An early-season, bright yellow nashi pear. Also known as New Century.

Like many Asian pears, Shinseiki is susceptible to fireblight and pseudomonas, but these disadvantages are very much outweighed by its positive features. It is self-fertile, and a pollenizer is not required for fruit set. It is also precocious, bearing in two-three years, and very productive; crops will need to be thinned to maintain annual bearing and prevent limb breakage. This pear has a low chill requirement and is a great choice for warm-winter climates.

This is the prettiest of our Asian pears, ripening early–around the same time as Hosui–to a bright yellow that is speckled with subtle, pale dots. The flesh is sweet, slightly tart, crisp, and very, very juicy. It is a perfect salad pear. Shinseiki hangs well on the tree and it stores for about two months.

Shinseiki is a Japanese selection introduced in 1945. This tree is also known as New Century, which is a translation of Shinseiki.
