This tree is self-fertile and another variety will not be needed for pollination. It is spreading, vigorous, and moderately resistant to bacterial spot and peach-leaf curl, but susceptible to brown rot. Saturn is cold hardy and has a prolific showy bloom; crops will need lots of thinning. Care must be taken during harvest as Saturn has stem-pull issues. (The skin around the stem tears as the peach is picked.)

This was one of the first "peento" peaches to be widely grown America, and the donut- (or bagel-, depending on your preference) shaped, supersweet little treat has become very popular in recent years. The skin is pinkish red over cream, smooth, and almost fuzzless. The white flesh has a velvety texture, tons of juice, and an amazing flavor that is very sweet with hints of almond and rose. It's out of this world! Our U-pick orchards are always busy when the donut peaches are picking.

Like all peaches, the peentos have their origin in China. They were introduced to America in 1869, but did not achieve recognition and popularity until the 1990s when Rutgers University breeders succeeded in creating a hardier tree with bigger, sweeter fruit. The new variety was named Saturn, comparing the shape of the peach to the Rings of Saturn. This particular peento would be known as a "silver" peach in China, as the Chinese divide peaches into silver (white) fleshed and gold (yellow) fleshed.
