An outstanding late-blooming freestone peach from NCSU. Also known as NC98-83.
Carolina Gold has a high chill hours requirement that rewards with a late bloom to avoid frosts. The young flower buds are resistant to cold injury and the tree is very resistant to bacterial spot. This is a high vigor and exceptionally productive cultivar.
A mid-late season peach, this fruit is large (often 3" diameter) with firm, freestone flesh that is slow to brown after slicing. This is a great canner! Carolina Gold was also selected for its full flavor and aroma.
Carolina Gold comes from the breeding program at NCSU, which also produced Challenger, Contender, Intrepid, and Carolina Belle. This peach is a 1995 cross of Biscoe with a breeding selection derived from Encore crossed with Calanda San Miquel 2383. It was selected in 1998.
