The Known-Unknowns

The Unknown-Knowns

The Unknown-Unknowns

Sometimes we know the scion and not the rootstock. Sometimes we know the rootstock and not the scion. Sometimes both are unknown, the dreaded Uknown-Unknown! Dreaded unless you are feeling like an ADVENTUROUS ORCHARDIST. If so, bravo!

How do mystery trees come to be?

Short answer: farmer error. There are numerous opportunities in the lifecycle of a nursery tree for positive identification to be confounded. It happens to a small percentage of trees each year. These are not fruits from another planet or specimens unknown to pomologists. It's just that we lost track and we can't tell by looking. So we offer them to the public at a big discount to encourage folks to introduce some adventure into their orchards. Mystery trees can be fun gifts, too.
