an enormous mutsu apple, though the picture doesn't show it, it was huge!Mutsu

Now, I, John have to add some to the Mutsu apple. No, it's not my favorite apple but it is close to the top. I'd put it in my top 10.  Unfortunately, this shot doesn't really show what I wanted to at all. My Mutsu trees are on M.27 rootstock and are in their 3rd year of leaf. The apple on the left was absolutely gigantic and probably weighed 2 pounds, maybe more. Nope, I'm not kidding.

Mutsu tastes like cider to me when it is ripe. It also can have an exotic, almost subtropical taste as can a good, Southern Hemisphere, Granny Smith. It is a good keeper, excellent in pies and out of hand. A Mutsu can practically be a meal in and of itself.

Now, you might wonder are there any problems with growing Mutsu. Well, it can be very sensitive to spring frosts. It can get blister spot. It is very susceptible to Fireblight especially on my combination. fireblight on mutsu apple treeSo, if you only have a small number of trees, you can cut the fireblight out making sure to get rid of the branches totally. I was able to control all of my fireblight this year through sanitation.

Let's see, what else? Oh, yes. For the small grower birds can be a problem, that is what the metal tape is in the first shot on this page. You can try using AOL disks in your trees (I knew they were good for something), just don't let them get too close to your apples. You can try inflatable owls. There are fancy bird alarms you can buy. If you live in a subdivision like me, you can't use the cannons that fire off every few minutes, well, at least I wouldn't advise it. You could get a dog. When I had my half-Chow, I had no problems with birds in the orchard at all...None.

Mutsu is a Triploid so it needs pollen2 mutsu trees on M.27 side by side from more than just another Mutsu tree. Make sure you have other cultivars around Mutsu that bloom around the same time period. Hmmm...you will need to spray Mutsu pretty well, besides Fireblight it is very susceptible to some of the summer rots, cedar apple rust, sooty blotch and fly speck. Also, don't forget your bug sprays!!

I'm sure Dad can add more to this little exposition OTOH, maybe you'd like to call us at: 315.789.7083 with your Mutsu story or line that you'd like to add to this page. Any Recipes? Are you ready to buy a Mutsu tree?Remember to stake them if, as I'd suggest, you buy them on dwarf rootstocks.
